Bilbao => Bikio => Mundake

We took the train north form Madrid to Bilbao. We were met by this stained glass in the Bilbao train station. Bilbao is in the northern part of Spain in what is called the Basque Country. We are going on another bike ride this one from Bilbao to San Sebastián in northern Spain.

Bilbao is another beautiful city with lots of space to walk around. Lots of hills around here.

Our hotel in Bilbao was next to this building. It is home to Bilbao Athletic Club football (soccer) team. We arrived just as one of their matches was about to start. Fans were walking around in their team colors. This photo was during the game. All of the fans arrive by transit or on foot. No cars in the parking lot! We could hear the cheering and singing from our hotel room. The home team beat Cádiz 3-0 so most fans went home happy.

At night the stadium looked like this displaying messages in the team colors of red and white. Quite an elaborate light show.

Like most of the places we have visited on this trip public transit has frequent service and is easy to use. We rode this to the Guggenheim Museum.

Guggenheim Museum. Wild looking building on the water in Bilbao. Inside space is almost a crazy as outside.

Across the river from the museum.

Flower market with beautiful flowers in Bilbao.

On the train from Bilbao to Pelentzia. Our ride started in Bilbao and we rode a few miles along the river to a train station.

In about 40 minutes we were off the train and riding in Pelentzia. Looks like the tide is out.

Nice bike and pedestrian bridge in Pelentzia.

On our bike ride today was the Lemóniz Nuclear power plant. The plant was started in the 1970’s but never finished due to protests and a change in government.

Pat at the top of one of many hills.

Magnificent views along the route.

Our ride included a wine tasting in Bakio at the Txakoli Museum. We enjoyed some samples of the local Txakoli wine only produced here.

Ready for dinner with sun setting on beach in Bakio our first overnight stop.

On the ride the next day we had had lunch in Bermeo. Many fishing boats operate from here.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxte built in the 9th century. We had views of this while riding very impressive!

Pat enjoying one of the hills. NOT

Mark coming downhill.

Ermita de Santa Catalina small church right on coast.

Mundaka our home for the night.

  1. Looks like wonderful countryside, and your weather continues to be great. We really enjoyed northern Spain. Come on, those hills can’t be too bad, you’ve got e-bikes (and wisely so)! A walk in the park compared to your across the USA ride. And as always your trip documentation is outstanding.

  2. Another interesting blog from you – you do such a beautiful job between the photos and the notations. That football (soccer) stadium looks very interesting, as does the Guggenheim Museum. Love that the fans all take public transportation, so no cars. Even though you are on electric bikes, the riding looks very challenging. Miss the two of you at WSC! Continue enjoying this amazing trip!
